Synergetics Workshop by Prof. Takaaki Bando
21.-31. Okt. 2013 - Synergetics Workshop
Not only relying on sensibility, functionality, but also acquiring scientific perspective, we designers will be able to integrate a new world-view derived from nature and its providence. 'Synergetics' proposed by Richard Buckminster Fuller (1895-1983), a well-known twentieth-century industrial designer, architecture, mathematician, educator will be one of appropriate suggestions. His philosophy 'Do more with Less' will lead us to change from the thought of vertical and horizontal axis which have been convinced as a common sense to omni-directional axis world. Nature itself does not adopt an angle of ninety degrees to determine its structure. According to his theory, the basic figure of the universe is a triangle and also the basic structure of the universe is a tetrahedron, not a square nor cube, and the principle of a space lies in the polyhedron structures created through the division of a regular tetrahedron, octahedron, and icosahedron. Specifically in this workshop, we will experience to build some kinds of spherical polyhedron structures to observe his cosmology. The reason why we learn his mathematical idea is that it will finally awake our another sense apart from the ordinary senses, and also it will show us the meaning how we designers should consider our responsibilities for the next generation.
21.-24. Okt. 2013 - Tensegrity
Tensegrity is the coined word from 'tension' and 'integrity' by Richard Buckminster Fuller. First model was invented by Kenneth Snelson, contemporary sculptor, and later, his teacher Fuller theorized its principle. Tensegrity is not just a spherical structure but the nature and the universe model. As nuclei and electrons not bonded, planet each other not bonded, bone each other not bonded, compression of the natural world is integrated by all attraction. We will make Tensegrity Structure Model with 30 struts of bamboo sticks after a short lecture of Synergetics.
